This poolside barbecue kitchen was designed with earthy, raw, natural colours to complement the surrounding isolated stretch of South Gippsland countryside. The home-owners desired a kitchenette made from eco-friendly materials that would be hard wearing to combat the outdoor elements.

Harnessing the daylight, this functional open plan provides plenty of work space between the built-in barbecue grill, separate gas burner and undermount sink. The two-door glass cupboard is designed to mirror the bar fridge, demonstrating design symmetry, further enhanced by floating shelving down each side of the canopy range hood focal point.

The hard wearing design features weatherproof kickers, carcasses, doors, shelving and backing, all constructed from 100% waterproof board, keeping away moisture from under the deck. The black flat panel doors and drawers house ample storage, including an underbench drawer-mount bin.

The composite 40mm Paperock benchtop is made from recycled paper that has been transformed into an extremely strong and durable solid surface material. Paperock was also selected because it is FSC certified and maintains no VOC emissions. The unique product compliments the upcycled timber wall panels, adding Black-Blonde clean lines, which are further exposed around the undermount sink. 

Other eco-sensitive materials include the stainless steel backsplash, sink and handles, made of 60% recycled content. The naturally strong and hard bamboo decking, a rapidly renewable resource, is beautiful, durable and kind to the planet. In addition, the long life expectancy of these materials means conservation of natural resources. 

The result is a successful fusion of earth-friendly and long lasting outdoor functionality that have come together to make the family’s preferred gathering space.
